An IUJ alumnus, Mr. Fajar Novianto, E-biz Class of 2006, gave a presentation at an international conference, "EcoDesign 2006 Asia Pacific Symposium," on December 11, 2006. IUJ researchers, involved in the "Supply Chain Management and Environmental Sustainability," PLATFORM program, have been conducting research on the "Mobile Phone Market Status and Possibility of 3Rs Activities in Indonesia". Mr. Novianto presented their findings at the conference.
His presentation report follows:
The symposium was held over two days, December 11 and 12. I gave a presentation on the 11th on the theme of recycling, reuse and remanufacturing. I discussed the status of end-of-life mobile phone handset circulation in my country, Indonesia.
There were 5 countries, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Germany, presenting their recycling situations in the session I joined. The session basically presented aspects of laws supporting 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) activites in each presenter's country.
We talked about RoHs (Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) and WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) laws.
In my opinion, Asia, maybe with the exception of Japan, is still in the process of developing its supporting laws for enhancing 3R activities, while the European Union (EU) has already gone far with their laws. So Asia is now learning from and discussing with the EU while developing those laws.
One presenter from the EU said in his presentation that every country in the world has its own policy of environment and its own way of achieving its environmental goals. However, our last goal is the same; to bring a good environment to our society.
In this symposium, every presenter was allowed to give advice to each other about his/her own experience to accelerate our activities. We also could give our proposals to the session.
Lastly, I hope this symposium can give me a good and broad view of the environment and promote IUJ's name as well.
