On October 30th, Dr. Malone, Rector of the United Nations University, gave a lecture titled “The UN Security Council at a Time of Geo-Strategic Tension.” Dr. Malone explained the diverse challenges that the UN Security Council faces in addressing current world affairs, such as the increasing complexity of civil wars in the Middle East and Africa, growing difficulties for UN PKOs, nuclear and missile development problems, and the power balance shift with the rise of China. JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka delivers first guest lecture for IUJ’s new Japan Development Program

On October 5th, Shinichi Kitaoka presented a special lecture on “Japan’s modernization and Fukuzawa Yukichi” at the MLIC Hall. Kitaoka is the current president of JICA, and a former professor and president of IUJ. The lecture was part of the new Japan Development Program operated jointly by IUJ and JICA, but was open to any interested students. The lecture gave an overview of Japan’s modernization after the Meiji Restoration, from the perspective of political and diplomatic history. Kitaoka described the transition from the feudal systems of the Edo period (1603-1868) to the modern political institutions and industrial state of the Meiji era. GSIR Dean and Vice President Noboru Yamaguchi and Professor Nawalage S. Cooray visited Indonesia to discuss the IUJ-Indonesia Linkage Program

From October 2nd to 6th, IUJ Dean and Vice President Noboru Yamaguchi and Professor Nawalage S. Cooray visited three Indonesian universities: Universitas Gajdjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Padjadjaran University (UNPAD). The purpose of their visit was to give presentations on the IUJ-Indonesia Linkage Program. To offer more professionals the opportunity to experience IUJ’s unique educational setting, the Graduate School of International Relations has partnered with these major universities to offer a double-degree program. The program involves one year of study at the student’s Indonesian university, and one year at IUJ. IUJ held its 2018 New Students Welcome Day

On Friday September 28th, IUJ had the pleasure of officially introducing 175 new students to campus at the annual Welcome Day event. This year’s new faces come from a total of 39 countries, spanning the globe from Denmark to Djibouti, Afghanistan to Argentina, and everywhere in between. IUJ President Hiroyuki Itami opened the ceremony, congratulating everyone on this new chapter of their lives. He spoke about his own time as a student at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States and mentioned his excitement paired with some trepidation at studying in a new country.
